St Joseph’s Makes a Splash
The St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Broadstairs swim team certainly made a splash at the Thanet Primary Schools’ Swim Gala on 21st May, achieving an overall placing of 5th out of over twelve local Thanet schools.
We were proud to field a record breaking team of 21 children from year 3 upwards at this regular and hotly contested event on the school sporting calendar. For many of these children, it was a debut performance at what can be an intimidating arena with a capacity crowd. However, our debutants (Harrison P, Isabelle T, Isobella M, Florence, Jameson, Saskia, Natalia, Jack and Heath) dealt with the rigours of competition with poise and aplomb. Great team spirit and committed individual and team relay performances showed strength in depth and bode well for next year’s competition. The year three and four pupils who swam in the first session were placed a very creditable seventh.
The veterans of the team Toby, Milly R, Millie V, Lola, Lloyd, Luca, Archie, Scarlett, Gabriela, Annie and Harrison Q) gave assured performances with some outstanding swimming which led to numerous podium appearances both as individuals and as a relay team with overall placing at the year 5 and 6 session of a stunning 2nd out of 13 schools ! A palpable desire to win coupled with a strong team spirit and breath taking individual skill demonstrates that being a “Minnow” in terms of school size, is no bar to success.
The “Evil Geniuses” behind the swim team – Annabelle Keyworth and Mandy Maclean (ably assisted by Mrs Vas and Mrs Barker) showed a Machiavellian grasp of tactics and as a School, we are very grateful to them for the hours that they have put in both poolside and at the computer on our behalf.
Congratulations to all involved !
