Exam Invigilator

Job purpose:                            

To provide an efficient and effective invigilation support service to the school examination section and ensure the integrity of its examinations in accordance with exam board rules and regulations.  You will be expected to work with limited supervision within agreed procedures and practices.

Key Responsibilities


Core Purpose and Accountability


Supervision of students.


Responsible for confidential documentation and information relating to students and assessment records.


Security of examination papers/scripts, equipment and stationery.


To collect examination papers and associated documentation and equipment.


To prepare the examination room, ensuring awarding body requirements are met.


To receive and seat students appropriately.


To announce regulations at the beginning of each examination and ensure they are strictly adhered to.


To undertake student identification and complete seating plans and other invigilation documentation.


To alert the examination staff immediately to any irregularities and complete the invigilator’s report.


To ensure all scripts and examination stationery are collected and checked at the end of each examination.


To return scripts and associated documentation and equipment to the examination office.


To carry out any additional duties, as required by the Examinations Officer or her nominated exams staff.


To co-operate with school management in all Health and Safety matters and to take reasonable care for the Health and Safety of yourself and other persons who maybe affected by your acts or omissions at work.


To know the current legal requirements, national policies and guidance on the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being of children and young people.  Know the local arrangements concerning the safeguarding of children and young people.  Know how to identify potential child abuse and neglect and follow safeguarding procedures.


To be available and flexible to work during the GCSE examination season (May/June) and PPE examinations throughout the year, and at any other times as requested by the Examinations Officer.


HOURS: Varied, depending on exam requirements

RATE: Hourly, on a claim basis






GCSE Maths and English or equivalent at Grade C or higher






Experience of working with young people, not necessarily in a school environment


Experience of communicating with people at all levels and the ability to communicate oral instructions clearly


Good preparation and organisational skills


Ability to work to deadlines









-Good interpersonal skills and ability to give accurate attention to detail


-Be enthusiastic and committed to the school

-Have the ability to adapt to change

-Be able to demonstrate a record of personal time management and possess the management skills necessary to direct others

-Operate calmly and effectively within an environment which makes variable demands

-At all times operate in a professional and tactful manner, reporting any concerns to the Examinations Officer.  Recognising any safeguarding or health and safety concerns.

-Have the ability to work as a member of a team as well as independently.

-Show initiative and self-motivation.

-Accuracy and attention to detail





-An understanding of examination processes






Confidentiality – to adhere to the School’s policies and procedures on confidentiality and the management and sharing of information.


Training in all aspects of invigilation will be given to the successful candidate
