VE Day 80 celebrations!

This term, our schools commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day, with a number of special events taking place, which enabled pupils and their families to celebrate together and mark the importance and the joy of peace.

Pictured below are just some of the wonderful events our schools held, including:

St Joseph's Primary in Broadstairs commemorated VE Day and also the 85th evacuation of Dunkirk.. The children attended an assembly in the morning during which they looked at the links to their local area, including the Sundowner ship which was captained by Captain Lightoller of the Titanic, and they also listened to the speech made by Winston Churchill declaring VE Day. Later in the day, the children made their own small ships and loaded them with love, care, and hope as  they sent them on their way to Dunkirk across the school's specially constructed English Channel!

St Joseph's History Lead, Sharon Osborne, said ‘it is such a major local historical event that we wanted to ensure the children learnt about the evacuation of Dunkirk and the important role played by the little ships of Ramsgate in the rescue of so many British and Allied troops”.

At St Peter’s Primary in Sittingbourne, the school was a sea of Red, White & Blue for VE Day, with many also dressed in fantastic 1940s style.

The school was delighted to welcome families for a special picnic on the field in the afternoon at which the children gathered to create the number 80, and were incredibly lucky with the weather as the sun also came out in celebration!
