St Augustine’s Primary Pupils Explore the Story of Jesus’ Baptism Through Art

Year 2 pupils at St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School in Tunbridge Wells have been deepening their understanding of the story of Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan through a thoughtful and creative art project.

As part of their Religious Education learning, the children explored how Jesus’ baptism marks the beginning of His mission and reveals God’s love for His Son. They studied the key symbols from the Gospel account — the flowing water of the Jordan, John the Baptist, and the dove representing the Holy Spirit — and used these elements to inspire their artwork.

Their finished pieces beautifully capture the themes of peace, promise, and new beginnings, demonstrating how young pupils can interpret Scripture through colour, symbolism, and storytelling.

The project not only helped the children grow in their understanding of the Christian faith, but also developed their artistic skills as they learned how artists use shapes, colours, and imagery to express meaning.
