St Edward’s Staff Join National Pilgrimage to the Shrine of St Edward the Confessor

Staff from St Edward’s Catholic Primary School in Sheerness recently took part in the National Pilgrimage to the Shrine of St Edward the Confessor at Westminster Abbey, deepening their understanding of the life and legacy of England’s only king to be canonised as a saint.

The pilgrimage brought together people from across the country to honour St Edward the Confessor, whose faith, humility and service continue to inspire Christians today. A special Mass was celebrated in Westminster Abbey, providing pilgrims with the opportunity to gather in prayer at this historic and sacred place. The Shrine of St Edward was also opened to pilgrims, offering a unique opportunity for personal reflection and devotion.

Following Mass, pilgrims were invited to take part in the Pilgrim Prayer Trail, “Before 1066”, a reflective journey through the Abbey. The trail guided participants through eight stations, each featuring stories, images, poems and prayers designed to encourage moments of quiet contemplation. Along the way, pilgrims were invited to consider the question: “How can Edward’s life and legacy help us live our lives today?”

The experience provided a valuable opportunity for prayer, reflection and spiritual renewal within the peaceful surroundings of Westminster Abbey. By exploring the example set by St Edward, staff were able to reflect on how faith, service and compassion can continue to shape our lives and work within our school communities.

The pilgrimage reflects St Edward’s ongoing commitment to nurturing faith and providing opportunities for spiritual growth, ensuring that Catholic values remain at the heart of school life.

“How can Edward’s life and legacy help us live our lives today?” was a question that encouraged all those attending to pause, reflect and consider how they can live out their faith in their daily lives.
